Voice-Controlled Mood Playlist Creation to Boost Spotify Engagement

Research into why Spotify listeners cannot quickly find mood-matched music, and a voice-led fix

The problem they went after

Listeners open Spotify with a feeling, not a search term. Surveys and interviews turned up a cluttered homepage, recommendations that land inconsistently, and enough friction in hunting for the right playlist that people give up or switch to YouTube. Mood is one of the strongest daily reasons to open the app, so that friction sits directly on top of engagement.

What they actually did

Rebecca scored seven identified problems with PIF, and mood-based playlist difficulty came out at 15 out of 15, ahead of recommendation accuracy and ad annoyance. The proposed fix is a voice-controlled mood playlist creator: say how you feel or describe the occasion, get a tailored playlist. It extends AI DJ, which users already view positively, into something conversational and hands-free. Two personas keep it concrete, with Parvathy on a commute and Anand switching playlists while coding or driving.

What you can take from it

Worth stealing

  • PIF scoring ranks seven problems before picking one
  • Extends the existing AI DJ rather than replacing it
  • Two personas ground the mood use case
  • 15 percent engagement lift over four months

PMs who need to prove which problem to solve, not just how

The transferable bitProblems get scored before solutions are designed. Seven candidates are ranked first, so the voice feature arrives as the answer to the highest-scoring one rather than a favourite idea looking for justification. The goal is then stated plainly as a 15 percent engagement lift over four months, tracked through session frequency, time in app, and new music exploration.
