Three ways to break YouTube's repetitive feed loop, picked from nine ideas using a RICE matrix
YouTube's recommender leans hard on recent viewing history, which locks idle watchers into an echo chamber of near-identical videos. Exploration loses out to exploitation, so nothing new surfaces and long-standing subscriptions stay buried. Watchers who hit that loop close the app or move to a competitor.
Nine solutions were brainstormed and scored on RICE; three advanced. The deep refresh gesture, a three-second pull that hard-resets session weights, scored highest at 27 because it interrupts the silent exit moment just before a bounce. The subscription vault shelf resurfaces creators a user has followed for over a year but has not seen recently. Ghost search task mode stops a one-off tutorial search from permanently skewing the homepage. All three are prototyped in Figma.

Working on discovery, recommendation diversity, or users stuck in feed loops
The transferable bitAlongside session extension, gesture adoption among daily actives, and discovery conversion outside the last 30 days of interactions, there is a check on whether refreshed content is so unfamiliar that it accelerates churn. Naming how your own fix could backfire is what separates a real metric set from a wish list.
