Identity Verification to Build Trust for OLX Buyers and Sellers

A trust fix for OLX: verify identity at onboarding, and flag sellers who behave like businesses

The problem they went after

Genuine buyers and sellers on OLX get uneasy dealing with unverified strangers, bots, and commercial sellers posing as individuals. Across primary and secondary research, 42 percent of respondents named missing verification as their main concern. That unease shows up as drop-off before a transaction completes, which drags on every revenue stream: third-party advertising, subscriptions and in-app purchases alike.

What they actually did

Two solutions were ranked on an impact-effort matrix. Identity Attestation makes government ID verification part of new-user onboarding, prompts existing users who never verified, and gives verified accounts a badge that reads as legitimacy in the listing. Velocity-Based Triggers flag any account posting ten or more listings in a month for commercial verification, so undisclosed businesses cannot hide among domestic sellers. The edge cases go further than most: stolen documents, forged business paperwork, burner accounts used to dodge the velocity rule, and churn from the added onboarding friction.

What you can take from it

Worth stealing

  • Impact-effort matrix on two verification solutions
  • Listing velocity as a commercial-seller signal
  • Churn guardrail against added verification friction
  • Edge cases: stolen IDs, forged docs, burner accounts

The transferable bitStudy this one for the metric structure. A 10 percent lift in average weekly users is the north star, transaction completion, chat volume and session time sit underneath it, and churn is the primary guardrail. That last choice is an honest admission that verification adds friction and that the friction has to be watched rather than assumed away.
