The problem they went after

Spotify carries 432 million ad-supported users, and full Premium at 350 rupees a month does not convert them because the offer does not match how they listen. Research cited here shows 40 percent of ad-supported users play a narrow selection of artists on repeat, so unlimited access to over 100 million songs is not the thing they would be paying for.

What they actually did

Two artist-based tiers. Select 4 lets a user pick four artists and gives ad-free listening, high-quality audio and offline downloads across them. Select 6 does the same across six. Both bill monthly or quarterly. The packaging is deliberate: it creates a personalised middle tier without cannibalising full Premium, and it lands where the listening behaviour already sits. Rollout starts with a 5 percent pilot audience to validate pricing and the artist-selection experience before scaling globally. The submission projects 5.5 billion euros in additional annual revenue from the tiers, with 16 percent quarter-over-quarter and 29 percent year-over-year growth.

What you can take from it

Worth stealing

  • Two tiers, Select 4 and Select 6, below Premium
  • Segmented on narrow listening behaviour, not stated willingness to pay
  • 5 percent pilot audience before a global rollout
  • Cannibalisation of Premium addressed in the packaging

PMs working on freemium conversion or a new pricing tier

The transferable bitSizing an offer to how people actually listen, rather than to the size of the catalogue, is the transferable idea. Four artists on repeat is a behaviour Spotify can already observe, so the tier is built on evidence instead of a survey about willingness to pay, and the business case is scoped to converting 30 percent of the 40 percent who fit that profile.
