The problem they went after

Assumptions about how people use a flagship phone rarely survive contact with a specific market. This project set out to find what actually frustrates iPhone 16 Pro Max owners in Ghana across three groups: tech enthusiasts, casual users, and professionals such as photographers and creative artists. The stated goal was uncovering real behaviour, not validating something the researcher already believed.

What they actually did

Recruiting ran through WhatsApp groups, Telegram, Messenger, LinkedIn and in-person workplace contacts. Interviews followed a structured 20 to 30 minute arc: warm-up probing, open story exploration, then targeted pain probes on friction during real device use. A five to ten question survey screened for at least six months of ownership before collecting frustrations, how often they occur, and what people wanted fixed first. Twenty responses came back.

What you can take from it

Worth stealing

  • Screener requiring six months of device ownership
  • Interview arc: warm-up, open story, pain probes
  • Recruiting across WhatsApp, Telegram, LinkedIn and workplaces
  • Satisfaction and fix-priority asked as separate questions

Running your first interview round and unsure how to structure the guide

The transferable bitThirteen respondents praised the camera, yet the top fix request was battery life, cited by fourteen. That gap between satisfaction and priority only appears because what people like and what they want fixed were asked as separate questions, and that split belongs in your own interview guide.
